"The department looks forward to welcoming residents into a building that was intentionally designed to foster relationships, collaboration, and trust."

The Broomfield Police Department broke ground on its new building on July 21, 2026. The 83,000-square-foot facility will be located at the southeast corner of Descombes Drive and 3rd Avenue. Work began at the site on July 27 and is expected to take approximately 20 months to complete.

The Police Department is currently headquartered at 7 Descombes Drive, where it occupies half of a 35,424-square-foot building. The other half is occupied by Broomfield Combined Courts. The existing facility is less than half the size necessary to accommodate the department’s current and anticipated operations.

“The new Police Department building is an investment in the future of public safety in Broomfield,” Chief of Police Enea Hempelmann said. “This facility will give our employees the space, resources, and technology they need to continue providing exceptional service while also creating a welcoming place for our community. We are especially excited about having a dedicated community room for meetings, educational pro-grams, and special events. The department looks forward to welcoming residents into a building that was intentionally designed to foster relationships, collaboration, and trust.”

Site preparation began ahead of construction and included the removal of the solar panels that were previously located in the lot. The panels were dismantled and recycled as the site was prepared for construction of the new facility.

As construction moves forward, residents should be aware of temporary impacts in the area. Broomfield, in partnership with FCI Constructors, will close West 3rd Avenue between Descombes Drive and Spader Way to through traffic during construction. The closure will allow crews to safely move between the construction site and staging area, while also providing on-street parking for contractor vehicles. Drivers, pedestrians, and others traveling through the area are encouraged to use caution and follow posted signs and detours.

Additionally, parking availability will be significantly reduced due to construction activity, fleet parking needs, and site safety requirements. As a result, there will be an increased demand for parking in the lots in front of and adjacent to the current BPD headquarters, Broomfield Combined Courts, and the George Di Ciero City and County Building. Community members planning to visit any of these buildings are encouraged to allow additional time to find parking and reach their destination.

Community members can also follow the project’s progress from groundbreaking through completion. A project timelapse camera provides a unique view of the construction site and will document the transformation as the new Police Department takes shape. The project timelapse video allows residents to watch construction progress and see the transformation of the site from start to finish.
